How To Make Your Best Boiled Egg

The Best Boiled Egg

Have you ever looked up a recipe far a perfect soft boiled egg, followed the recipe exactly step by step and still your eggs turn out over done? Yep, me too. I have also downloaded numerous egg timer apps. I ran across the following neat little experiment in “The 4-Hour Chef” by Tim Ferriss. (affiliate link, highly recommended)

What is the problem with other boiled egg recipes?

Most recipes you have seen probably read like this…

Place the eggs in the water. Boil for X minutes. Remove and shock in cold water, then peel. The problem with this is there are many variables that are not accounted for. What size eggs are you using? At what altitude are you cooking? There are many others. This “eggsperiment” 🙂  will eliminate all of the variables.

Here is what you will need

  • Timer (I use my phone)
  • a pot or saucepan with a lid
  • 4 eggs
  • tongs
  • baking soda
  • salt and pepper

Let’s Cook It

We’ll start by filling your pot or saucepan with about 3″ of cold water and 1 tsp baking soda to make the eggs easier to peel. Set your burner on high and wait for the water to come to a boil. Gently add all of the eggs to the water using your tongs and start your timer. After 6 minutes remove one egg with the tongs and run it under cold water and save on a washcloth or in a cup. After 7 minutes repeat with the next egg and so on. Try not to get them mixed up. Here is my son Ayden helping me out.

How to peel a boiled egg

Tap both ends of the egg on the counter and gently roll them on the counter. Then peel under cold running water. Alternately you can try a little trick if you plan to eat the eggs yourself. Don’t attempt if you didn’t use the baking soda as suggested. Peel a little bit of shell from each end of the egg. Hold the egg in one hand and place the other just beyond the egg and blow the egg out of the shell. Let me know below in the comments if it worked. Here is what you should now have.
